Rila Monastery Day Tour

*Bonus Boyana Church visit - optional

Rila Monasery was founded in the l0th century by the Bulgarian monk St. Ivan of Rila and was rebuilt in the l3th -l4th century. From that time are the fortress tower (1334), the bishop's throne, richly carved doors and some manuscripts, icon-paintings and church plates. In the l5th century, when Bulgaria fell to the Ottoman Turks, the monastery was abandoned for a short time but in the second half of the same century it was restored to a new life. The Rila Monastery has been listed as a world monument of culture.

After breakfast, at around 9 o'clock, our driver will meet you at the Reception desk of your hotel in Sofia for a pleasant and comfortable 2 hours drive to the Rila Monastery. After arriving at the monastery, you will be able to enter and walk around inside to feel the ancient atmosphere. Climbing up the narrow wooden stairs inside the Hreljo tower is a really unforgettable experience. The Monastery's museum is recently renovated and well worth a visit too. In the Monastery you will also have the chance to visit: The Church "Birth of the Holly Virgin", the coffin of Tsar Boris III, The Monastery Kitchen /called Magernitsa/, Hrelyo's defence tower, Transfiguration Chapel, The Museum.

At lunchtime or after the tour inside the Rila Monastery, we can arrange an option for a tasty meal at one of the local restaurants - close to the monastery. Fresh trout, from the wild Rilska river that runs by the Rila Monastery, is one of best lunch options. But before that you will have the chance to buy locally produced wines, honey, wood-carved items and other souvenirs sold in the small shops around the monastery.

After lunch we'll drive back to Sofia and arrive at the hotel at around 16:00
*Bonus Boyana Church visit - optional on the way back to Sofia

Melnik & Rozen monastery day tour

The town of Melnik is the smallest town in Bulgaria with just 230 permanent residents. It lies in the southwestern slopes of the Pirin mountain and 190 km to the south of Sofia. The town, together with the neighbouring Rozhen monastery is declared a cultural and historic reserve.

The breath-taking Melnik pyramids rank among the most remarkable natural phenomena in Bulgaria. Over an area of about 17 sq. km. millennia-long erosion has created a truly unearthly world. It is up to the visitor’s imagination to distinguish obelisks, ancient towers, pyramids, and giant mushrooms among the various forms of erosion. And while the sand-like rocks seem quite fragile at first sight, this natural phenomenon has proven extremely resistant to wind and water and has survived intact for ages now. What is even more intriguing is the practical use of a number of these pyramids around for nothing else but wine cellars! Apart from the unique natural surroundings, the town also boasts for the fascinating architecture of its old Melnik houses, most of which were built during the Bulgarian Renaissance to testify for the grandeur and richness of the commercial hub with 25,000 inhabitants, which Melnik once used to be. Some of these are the famous Kordopoulov’s House with its impressive wall paintings and huge private cellar and the Boyar House, the latter being the oldest house in Bulgaria. The ruins of the St Nicholas monastery (12th century), Slav’s fortress (13-14th century), the Roman bridge and the old Turkish bath are other places of interest there. Moreover, some 7km away from the town, up in the Pirin mountain, one can ride to one of the largest and most beautiful monasteries in Bulgaria - the Rozhen monastery.

Plovdiv & Bachkovo monastery day tour

Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria Located at southeast of Sofia in the Thracian Lowland. Ancient Philippopolis (372 B.C.) - capital of Alexander the Great's father still keeps remarkable monuments from Roman times. On this tour you’ll also see the amazing architectural ensemble of The Old Plovdiv, which preserves the atmosphere of the town from the beginning of the 19th century.
Being older than most of the oldest towns like Rome, Athens, Carthage or Constantinople, almost contemporary of Troy, Plovdiv is a town built upon layers of towns and a culture developed upon layers of cultures. Plovdiv is a picturesque town, with many parks and gardens, museums and archaeological monuments. Its old part, called the Old Town, is an imposing open-air museum situated on the three hills of the ancient Trimontium. One of the most remarkable sights of the town, the Ancient Theatre (a well-preserved Roman amphitheatre), is located there and is still used for open-air performances.

Bachkovo Monastery - One of the oldest monasteries in the Bulgarian lands, it rises in the picturesque Chaya river valley, 29 km south of Plovdiv. Founded in 1083, Bachkovo Monastery is chiefly known for its original architecture, rich collections of old icons, jewelry, coins and church plate. The library preserves many valuable incunabula and old manuscripts. Its most remarkable feature, however, are the paintings that are seen everywhere - in the church and ossuary, where the figure of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Alexander is discernible among the 11th and 14th century murals

Veliko Tarnovo and Tsarevets Fortress day tour

Veliko Turnovo is the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (1185 -1393), located 240km northeast of Sofia. On this tour you will enjoy the views of the meandering Yantra River encircling the strongholds of Tsarevets, Trapezitsa and Sveta Gora Hills, on which the old capital is situated - making them unapproachable in ancient times and one of the most wonderful places in Bulgaria today.

You will feel the atmosphere of Bulgarian National Revival times - The Old Gurko Street and the Samovodska Charshiya, a merchant and crafts centre; which are fine example of local building traditions. You will have a chance to admire the genuine masterpieces of the self-taught master Kolyo Ficheto: The Konak (now National Revival and Constituent Assembly Museum), St. Cyril and Methodius Church, The St. Constantine, and Helena Church. During this trip you will have a professional guide speaking your language.

The Tsarevets Fortress is one of the highlights of this tour. Situated in the picturesque town of Veliko Turnovo, Tsarevets captures you with its magnificent architecture. It was the main Bulgarian fortress in the days of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (1185 - 1393). During this period Bulgaria returned to its old blaze and glory from the best years of the First Bulgarian Kingdom, becoming one of the most influential countries in South Eastern Europe. In medieval times the hill was thickly built up with administrative and home buildings, situated on its slopes with the King's and patriarchal palaces on the top.
